While staying with my host family in Mexico, I was introduced to the salacious and spicy phenomenon known as Telenovela. I could only understand drips and drabs due to the rapid speech of the actors, but the emotions were as clear as if they were speaking English. Such fire. Such passion. Such violence on a soap opera!! I was hooked! During rainy days, my host mother, sisters, and the cook would crowd around the tiny kitchen television with fresh-baked tortillas, some queso fresco, fruit, and chorizo and get lost in the drama for an hour. We laughed and gasped in unison while stuffing our faces with snacks. It was amazing and I really felt like part of the family. Someday I will return to that tiny town in Mexico and perhaps I’ll get to watch some telenovelas with these amazing women again. Until such time, Salud!
