Gin might not be the first spirit that comes to mind when you think of tiki drinks, but the Saturn cocktail proves it deserves a place in the stars. Created by California bartender J. "Popo" Galsini in 1967, this vibrant drink won the International Bartender’s Association World Championship and quickly became a tiki standout. Originally named the X-15 (after a rocket plane), Galsini later renamed it Saturn, a nod to the space race and a fitting title for a cocktail that’s truly cosmic in flavor.Despite its tropical soul, Saturn swaps rum for gin and balances it with fresh lemon juice, sweet passion fruit syrup, nutty orgeat, and spiced falernum. The result is a smooth, citrusy drink with layered complexity and just the right amount of tiki drama. Shake one up and get ready to launch happy hour into orbit.
Garnish with cocktail cherry speared between two citrus peel rings.
Notes:
Integrating passion fruit syrup or liquor into your home bar is an excellent way to elevate any citrus-forward cocktail. Chinola is a great shelf-stable passion fruit liquor but keep in mind that at 21% ABV, it is not a direct substitute for passion fruit syrup. When using Chinola in a Saturn, you will want to play with the ratios a bit to find the right balance. A high-quality passion fruit syrup will have a more concentrated flavor, so when using Chinola, you may need to add a bit more of the liqueur to achieve a similar taste profile.
