This week, we're repurposing that Orgeat from last week's Mai Tai and introducing passion fruit to make another tiki classic: the Saturn. Tracing its origins back to the 1960s, the Saturn Cocktail is a classic tiki drink that has stood the test of time. Created by legendary bartender J. "Popo" Galsini during the golden era of tiki culture, this gin-based concoction gained recognition when Galsini won the International Bartender's Association World Championship with it in 1967.
Combining the exotic flavors of passion fruit and Orgeat makes this gin based cocktail a vibrant and refreshing ode to its tropical roots. So lets shake a few up for happy hour today!
Garnish with cocktail cheery speared between two citrus peel rings.
Notes:
Integrating passion fruit syrup or liquor into your home bar is an excellent way to elevate any citrus-forward cocktail. Chinola is a great shelf-stable passion fruit liquor but keep in mind that at 21% ABV, it is not a direct substitute for passion fruit syrup. When using Chinola in a Saturn, you will want to play with the ratios a bit to find the right balance. A high-quality passion fruit syrup will have a more concentrated flavor, so when using Chinola, you may need to add a bit more of the liqueur to achieve a similar taste profile.
