Grapefruit Reviver

Bittersweet in the best way.

The Grapefruit Reviver is proof that a little bitterness can go a long way. Inspired by the classic Brown Derby, this bourbon cocktail layers bright grapefruit juice with the unmistakably bold bite of Malört for a drink that’s crisp, citrusy, and unexpectedly refreshing. Created by James Sauer at North of Bourbon in Louisville, it’s a cocktail that leans confidently into contrast.

High-proof bourbon brings warmth and structure, while rich demerara syrup smooths out the sharper edges. Grapefruit keeps things lively and bright, and the Malört adds a dry, herbal bitterness that lingers just enough to keep each sip interesting. If you’ve been curious about Malört but weren’t sure where to start, this might be your perfect introduction. Bold, balanced, and a little rebellious, the Grapefruit Reviver is a cocktail that wakes up your palate in all the right ways.
