The history of vintage drinks is fascinating, and the "sling" is no exception. A precursor to the cocktail, slings featured spirit, water, sugar, bitters, and were likely used for medicinal purposes in the early 1800s.
According to cocktail historian Ted Haigh, Straits Sling originated at the Long Bar of Singapore's Raffles Hotel around 1915. Years later it was reformulated into the sweeter, more tropical Singapore Sling.
Today's recipe comes from Martin Cate, bartender and owner of Smuggler's Cove. The botanical complexity of the gin is refreshing alongside Heering cherry liqueur and Benedictine (a French herbal liqueur) – which are also present in the Singapore Sling. The departure here is in the citrus and sweeteners. Straits Sling swaps pineapple, lime and orange with lemon and demerara syrup for a dryer, pleasantly tart and slightly sweet flavor profile.
Would a sling by any other name taste as sweet? We guess you'll just have to try it to find out.
