The Mai Tai is a tiki icon, but the Ultimate Mai Tai takes the classic to another level with one seriously impressive rum blend.
Created by Mai Tai enthusiast Kevin Crossman, it pairs the traditional lime, orange curaçao, orgeat, and sugar with equal parts Appleton 12, Smith & Cross, Planteray OFTD, and Planteray Xaymaca. The result is bold, funky, and unapologetically rum-forward.
The original Mai Tai dates back to 1944, when Victor “Trader Vic” Bergeron created it in Oakland. Unlike the fruit juice-heavy versions that came later, the original was simple and focused on showcasing great rum.
That’s exactly what the Ultimate Mai Tai does. Four rums, one tiki classic, and a name it more than lives up to.

½ oz. Appleton Estate 12 Year Jamaican Rum
½ oz. Planteray (Plantation) O.F.T.D. Rum
½ oz. Planteray (Plantation) Xaymaca
½ oz. Smith & Cross Navy Strength Jamaican Rum
2 oz. Ultimate Mai Tai Rum Blend (recipe above)
1 oz. Lime juice (save your spent lime shell for garnish!)
½ oz. Orange Curaçao (we used Maison Ferrand)
½ oz. Orgeat Syrup
¼ oz. Demerara Syrup
Mint & Spent Lime Half (for garnish)
Combine all liquid ingredients in your Hybrid Cocktail Shaker with ice and shake for about 15 seconds to chill.
Strain into a pebble ice-filled Hybrid Cocktail Glass and fill with additional ice to top.
Garnish with spanked mint and spent lime shell.
